New Lawn Care and Maintenance

WATERING

The first 14 to 21 days are crucial. To obtain good seed germination, proper watering is required. A slow, steady application of water several times a day may be necessary. To avoid washouts, do not apply water at an excessive rate. DO NOT ALLOW THE SURFACE TO DRY OUT. If it does, the seed and/or seedlings may die.

When watering after the grass is established, the top six inches of soil must be kept moist by a slow, steady sprinkling in an amount equal to one inch of rainfall per week. That is about 8 to 9 hours (all night) in one location per week. The frequency of watering depends on the soil type, drainage, temperature and rainfall. A rain gauge could be helpful.

PESTS AND WEEDS

To protect your lawn from grubs and other insects, you may need to apply one of several insecticides at least once a year. Weed seeds may have been in the soil prior to seeding and may germinate in the lawn. These can usually be controlled once the lawn becomes established.

Lawncare and Maintenance

MOWING

The grass should be cut at a height of 2 1/2 to 3 inches and be allowed to grow to a height of no more that 3 1/2 to 4 inches.

FERTILIZATION

Proper fertilization is required to develop a beautiful deep green, healthy lawn. Fertilizer was applied at the time of seeding and and should be replenished 4 to 6 weeks following installation of the lawn, with an application of 10-20-20 at the rate of 10 lb. per 1000 square feet of lawn. An application 3 to 5 times a year is generally required depending on the type of fertilizer used and the soil conditions.
