Tips and Techniques for Watering Your Lawn

Maintaining a green, healthy lawn is an important part of landscaping and can contribute to the curb appeal of a property. It is essential to take additional care during times of drought and excessive heat. To ensure that your lawn is looking its best, and can survive during less than ideal weather, several details should be taken into account.

Your lawn's soil type, slope, and grass type, as well as local weather conditions, should dictate how much water your lawn receives.

On average, a lawn should receive 1-1.5 inches of water per week. Place a rain gauge or measurable container on the lawn. Even a tuna can would work! Once the correct amount, it's time to turn off the sprinkler or move to the next section of lawn. In times of drought and heat, increasing your normal watering habits is essential. Your lawn may need up to two inches of water per week.

A common mistake is watering too frequently, for less time. The key is to water less, but for a longer duration. If your lawn is receiving 1 - 1.5 inches of water per week, you should be watering 2 - 3 times per week to achieve this amount.

The best time to water your yard is early in the morning so that the morning sun evaporates any excess water. If a yard is watered at night, any water not soaked into the soil remains on the grass all night and can contribute to disease issues.

Obviously, you want to water all parts of your lawn, but be aware of your yard's slope. You want to be sure you are preventing any pooling and dispersing the water evenly.

Finally, it's important to note that heat can damage your lawn regardless of your watering habits. Even a meticulously-maintained lawn can be hurt in times of high heat.

Remember, a good healthy established lawn wants water! Following these tips consistently can help provide you with the greenest, healthiest lawn possible. Call our landscaping company if you have any other questions about your lawn maintenance.
